Our Midwifery Philosophy

We are passionate about helping you through your labour with as little pain relief as necessary. With training and experience to support you through all outcomes, we aim to get the best possible birth experience for you.

We encourage a natural approach to birth guided by the New Zealand College of Midwives philosophy of partnership with women. We support the use of alternative medicine and promote natural methods of pain relief including TENS (Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation).

Our Midwives

Linda Snelling Berg

Linda, Tauranga MidwifeI believe in a woman’s ability to birth normally most of the time. I support you in your decisions regarding your pregnancy and help you make informed choices around your care and your birth plan. I love my career as an Independent Midwife. Having a passion and an enthusiasm for this demanding role.

Linda

My Passion, Your Experience

I am an experienced midwife and have been providing independent midwifery care for over 5 years. I am a Registered Nurse and Midwife since 2002. I have practiced at Waikato Hospital as a Staff Midwife gaining experience in all departments. I have also worked at a Birthing Unit in Hamilton, and at Tauranga Maternity Unit.

I hold a current annual practicing Certificate and adhere to all the standards and compulsory components as laid down by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand.

Midwifery is a “way of life”

To me, Midwifery is a way of life working with you and your family/whanau in partnership to obtain the best possible birth experience for you, we’ll discuss a Birth Plan so that I know the kind of birth you are hoping for.

A midwife supports and cares for women with compassion, understanding and respect so they feel more positive about themselves, their bodies and their abilities to cope throughout the birthing process.

Maggie, Tauranga MidwifeI enjoy the partnership we develop and helping you to be confident in your decision making. You are faced with many choices and I help empower you to make the right decisions for you and your family. I would love to join you on your journey to motherhood.

Maggie

Your Choice of Care

I am a Registered Nurse/Midwife and have been a qualified Midwife for over 20 years.

Six years of independent midwifery has helped me grow and flourish and I love the continuity of care.

Friendly and Caring appoach

I am passionate that women should be given every chance to birth normally and that most of the time this is achievable. With a friendly, caring approach to my work, I like to provide the kind of care and service I would be looking for if I was pregnant. Midwifery is not a job, it’s a way of life. Together we plan your pregnancy and labour, and I will support you in your informed decisions.

Midwifery in New Zealand

the Nurses Amendment Act

funny faceIn October 1990 the government passed the Nurses Amendment Act. This allowed Registered Midwives to practice midwifery, independently of a General Practitioner.

With respect to antenatal and postnatal visits and the management of low-risk births, the Midwife has full clinical responsibility.

Under the Act,
a Registered Midwife can carry out the following:

  • Prescribe medication for you, providing that the medication is solely related to your pregnancy
  • Authorize blood tests
  • Authorize scans

Lead Maternity Carer (LMC)

You may see the term LMC a number of times to do with midwives, this just means Lead Maternity Carer, they are the person you register with who coordinates your midwifery care including referrals to a specialist.

baby deliveryThe LMC coordinates your care and remains involved even if your care is handed over to the obstetric team (this is called handover to secondary care) in the case of an emergency or complication. In this case the doctors make decisions following a three way discussion that includes you the patient and the LMC.

You must always contact your LMC first for all pregnancy-related issues. If in doubt, ring them first. You will still need to visit your G.P. for all other health concerns. You will have to pay their consultation fee as it will not be a pregnancy related visit.

Birthing Experiences

Keiran, Tauranga

I’m the proud Mum of three wonderful, beautiful children, each very different from their other siblings and each with their own unique birthstory that has just one common thread - the fantastic care and support we received from our fabulous midwife Linda Snelling Berg.

- Ingrid, Tauranga

Dear Maggie, I just wanted to say a special thank you to you for being such a wonderful midwife to me. You were always so supportive, caring and knowledgeable! I am so grateful I found you as my midwife.

To Linda, Thank you so much for all you have done for us over the last year. Your support has been great and we couldn’t done it without you.

- Belinda, Te Puke

We want to thank Maggie so much for everything. All the loving kindness she have shown towards us during this new and exciting time with our new baby girl. She’s an amazing lady and I’m glad you were our midwife.

Thank you Maggie so much for all your support and encouragement throughout the delivery and the past 9 months. You were so reassuring and confident which really meant so much to us.

Stephanie, Tauranga

Linda’s approach to delivering my babies has always been totally professional while being calm, relaxed and helping everyone feel at ease. She is knowledgeable and informative yet has allowed me to make my own choices/decisions without feeling judged.

- Inge, Tauranga

Dear Maggie, Just wanted to say a huge thank you for being such an awesome midwife to me. You were fantastic all the way through the maternity care period and especially when I was in labour. Really appreciated all your help, assistance etc.

I cannot fault the care Linda has given us and certainly wouldn’t hesistate to use her again. Almost makes it worthwhile trying again, though we are not planning on it. Thank you Linda. You have helped us create some of our best memories.

Our midwife Maggie was fantastic - I also had her for my first child. My labours went fantastically and I was very happy with the deliveries and recovery. Maggie was always happy to help with aftercare too - no call was ever a pain.

Joey, Papamoa

As a proud Dad of a son and daughter couldn’t be happier with Linda as the midwife for both deliveries. Actually I would have driven to Bluff for the ‘second one’ if she would have moved there (although I’m glad she didn’t). Always happy, always smiling and always took the time for us. Thanks Linda!

- Erwin, Papamoa

Maggie was excellent and always kept me informed. She gave me the opportunity to choose the best option for us. She was practical, organised and thorough. I was very pleased with her care.

During and after my pregnancy with a single baby then twins Linda was a rock. Anytime I had worries about something she would explain what was going on and was very knowledgeable and patient. I would strongly recommend her to new mum’s to be. Don’t worry, you’re in good hands with her as your midwife. All the best.

- Petra, Tauranga

Maggie was a great midwife for my two girls. She always listened to me, made sure I understood things and was calm in labour which helped a lot. Would definitely recommend her to my friends. Will miss her and would like to thank her very much for her support.

Maggie ensured we were well educated with all we needed to know throughout the pregnancy. She was always very supportive and we were extremely happy with the care she provided.
